Avebury and Stonehenge
This is a trip into Neolithic Wiltshire on a bright chilly day with Nikko. Memories of a school trip when I was 12 came back, drawing the inside of West Kennet Long Barrow tomb. We walked from Silbury hill which is one of the oddest man-made landscapes you will ever see, over the hill to the avenue of stones which leads to Avebury. The low sun cast dramatic shadows on the ditches. We walked the entire perimeter of the circle, which encloses a small village. Can’t help wondering why on earth they built a village here, and what it must be like living slap bang in the middle of an ancient stone circle. We rushed back to the car and made a dash for Stonehenge 10 miles away. Chasing dusk. I so wanted to see the stones at sunset. As we approached the sun had gone, the road was closed to traffic, and there was no entrance. We had a curious glimpse of the stones through a wire link fence. So close, but so far away, as dusk faded and a TV crew set up some lights for a night-time filming.
